The Moorchild
Mirroring feelings typical to those of a child entering adolescence, THE MOORCHILD deals with issues of identity, family love, genetic heritage, and finding one`s place in the world. Moqul is the daughter of a human father and a Moorfolk mother (a type of fairy). When Moqul`s true background is discovered, she is rejected by the Moorfolk who then steal a human baby (whom they plan to use as a servant), and replace her with Moqul, who herself has been turned back into an infant. Now being raised by unwitting humans, Moqul is renamed Saaski and loses all memory of her Moorfolk heritage. Eventually, however, Saaski begins to remember her life among the Moorfolk--and realizes what happened to the real child of her beloved foster parents. Determined to correct this crime, Saaski sets out to find, and bring home, the child she replaced. A 1997 Newbery Honor Book.
